Being the incredibly vain individual that I am, I simply can't cope with being pale in the summer! I'm about as tanned as a sheet of A4 paper and if I go in the sun I burn almost instantly, a running joke amongst friends is that I'm secretly a red head because of how pale I am!! (I'm not secretly a red head btw!)
I have literally tried everything, sunbeds (at the age of 15 - awful I know!), spray tans, fake tan, gradual tan, instant wash off tan... everything! So, as its getting a bit warmer (well it was, it poured it down today!) I have started my 'get ready for summer' mission! Generally I only use gradual tanners between April and June, in June I'll start going for regular spray tans or using non-gradual fake tan at home! With this in mind I ventured out and bought a couple from Asda, I've used each one for a week and I'm going to compare them and review them for you!
First up: Garnier Skin Naturals: Summer Body moiturising lotion - 'light'I've no idea why the bottle looks so full in the picture! I've used loads! anyway...
Packaging and claims: Garnier claims that this lotion gradually builds a natural looking sun-kissed tan and also provides 12 hour moisturisation. It also boasts a 'summer fresh fragrance' and claims to 'work in harmony with your skin tone'. The packing is simple but effective, a nice golden-yellowy colour and I've found that the product doesn't dry and clump round the lid :)
Smell: Although this smells faintly of citrus, it certainly isn't a 'summer fresh frangrance'. To put it simply, it stinks, like all fake tan does!
Application: I used this every other day for a week and applied it with latex gloves on all over my body (and got stew to do my back) and also onto my face. It applys smoothly and evenly and a little goes quite a long way. I did however, find that it doesn't seem to dry, I put this on before bed and I was still 'sticky' in the morning, totally gross!!
Price: This is currently on offer for £2 in Asda but it retails at around a fiver :)
Development/colour: Generally this seems to take an extremely long time to build any colour at all, furthermore, when it did start to 'darken me up' it went patchy and just looked a bit weird. I'm sure it wasn't my application as I've used gradual tanners so much before! This is a serious negative for me, patchy tan is not good.
Overall opinion: Smells slightly better than a normal fake tan but takes forever to dry, develops incredibly slowly, and goes patchy :/ not great really.
Out of 10: I'd probably give this a 3 or 4...
Secondly: Dove Summer Glow and Soft Shimmer: beauty body lotion - 'Fair to medium skin'Packaging and claims: Typical dove packaging, cute and effective. This is a moisturiser with subtle self-tanners and light reflecting particles that 'gradually builds a light summer tan'. Dove claim that this will give you a luminous, sun-kissed look'.
Smell: Awful! Typical fake tan smell, all of my housemates moaned for ages that the house stank!
Application: I applied this every other day for a week in exactly the same way as the garnier tanner. It absorbs into the skin quickly and easily and I was able to get dressed (in jeans and a fitted top, to go out for dinner) after around 20 minutes :) However unlike the garnier tanner, this product doesn't go very far and you have to slap it on!
Price: This is currently on offer in Asda for £3 and it normally retails for about a fiver.
Development/colour: I immediately noticed a difference in colour after the first application and it built up really really well over the course of a week! It looked absolutely fantastic and was completely even, plus the 'glittery' bits in it meant that my skin looked glossy, healthy and glowing when I went out in the sun! I was absolutely chuffed with the colour and it took a while to completely fade, meaning it wasn't a drastic pale-to-tan-to-pale situation!
Overall opinion: Its going to take a damn good gradual tanner to beat this little beast! It makes me look healthier, more tanned and keeps my skin baby soft for well over 24 hours after using it! Its incredibly easy to apply and dries super quickly! The only downside to this product is the smell, but who cares, the tan it gives you is divine!
Out of 10: 9 - it stinks! ;)
I'm also going to be trying Johnsons gradual tanner so look out for a review on that soon! Do you use gradual tanners? Which one is your favourite?
